‘Spider-Man 4’: Sony Planning Early Fall Production Start Date As Hunt for Director Continues

Spider-Man No Way Home

It’s been over two years since Sony made almost $2 billion on Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Tom Rothman and the rest of the Sony executives have been eager to get back into live-action Spidey business. The star, Tom Holland, has been one of the holdups, as he’s been taking a break from acting lately. However, Sony and Marvel have been busy at work for the past few years ever since they signed Holland back a year or so ago.

Though no release date has been set, there’s been enough smoke surrounding this movie to believe that they might be gearing up for an announcement soon. Reporter Jeff Sneider uncovered, when digging into the Euphoria season 3 production delays, that the yet-untitled Spider-Man 4 is supposed to start shooting in either September or October, which is why Zendaya will not be available in the second half of the year to shoot the HBO series.

As far as how that affects Euphoria, apparently showrunner Sam Levinson, who is in the middle of a creative overhaul of the new season as he gets everyone out of high school, was aware of his lead actress’ commitment and was OK with waiting until early 2025 to shoot the third season.

Details on the Spider-Man 4 script, which Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are rumored to be penning once again, are unclear at this point, but it seems that Sony and Marvel’s mian concern at this point is on the director. Though it was originally speculated that Jon Watts would return, it seems like that is no longer the case, though the reasoning hasn’t transpired yet. Names like Drew Goddard have been tossed around, but Sneider threw another one in the mix who was apparently in the running for the gig: Justin Lin, who directed a few Fast & Furious movies as well as Star Trek: Beyond.

No release date has been set for Spider-Man 4, which will be, like in the past, a Marvel Studios production with Sony Pictures distributing. Spider-Man: No Way Home started production around the same early-fall window, and was finished in time for December of the next year, which proved to be a highly lucrative month for them. However, with Avatar 3 scheduled for Dec. 2025, it’s more likely that they will wait until the summer of 2026.
