Vince Gilligan Plotting New Original Series, Networks Lining up To Hear the Pitch

With Better Call Saul airing its series finale this month, Vince Gilligan is moving on from Albuquerque and getting ready for his next TV adventure.

According to Deadline, at least 8-9 networks and streaming platforms are lined up to hear the new pitch, which is set to be a wholly original story. Gilligan said in a recent interview there will be no more stories told in the Breaking Bad universe. In fact, according to the trade, this new series will be more in line with the X-Files, a series Gilligan was already involved in back in the day.

In the episodes he wrote for that show, Gilligan tended to focus more on the human condition rather than the science-fiction elements of the show. And he will be doing the same here, with the project being described as the new Twilight Zone; set in our world but with a twist, it will explore “the human condition in an unexpected, surprising way”. It would run for a couple of seasons, with a defined and contained story — Gilligan has already done some writing on it that he will be presenting together with the pitch for the show, giving buyers a tangible look at what they are bidding for.

Vince Gilligan is a four-time Emmy winner, co-creator of two of the most acclaimed TV shows of the century, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. The latter has earned 46 nominations to date, including 7 this year, and will air the final episode of its sixth and final season on August 15. Breaking Bad, one of the most influential television series of all time, won 16 Emmys over its five seasons, including Best Drama Series (twice), Best Actor for Bryan Cranston (four out of six nominations), Best Supporting Actor for Aaron Paul (three times out of five nominations), and Best Supporting Actress for Anna Gunn (twice out of three nominations). It also launched the careers of most of the cast into the stratosphere — Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Bob Odenkirk, or Giancarlo Esposito, to name a few — as well as some of our most acclaimed directors today, including Oscar nominee Rian Johnson, who directed three of the show’s most acclaimed episodes.

Stay tuned for more news on Gilligan’s next series coming soon, as we sense a bidding war about to erupt.
