Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie Plot Their Next Four Movies Together

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie

A new report by Deadline has updated us on the status of five projects that Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are developing now, from Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two to four new movies.

According to the story, Cruise’s big stunt on M:I8, which is filming right now in the U.K., will be something called “speed flying”. From Wikipedia, “speed flying is done by launching from a slope with the wing overhead, already inflated by the incoming air. The main difference between speed flying and paragliding, is that speed flying is meant to create a fast, thrilling ride close to the slope, while the point of paragliding is usually to maintain a longer, gentler flight.”

In addition to Ethan Hunt’s next adventure, the two are working on a new action-adventure flick “with franchise potential”. No additional details are known at this point. Cruise and McQuarrie are also planning to dive into the song-and-dance genre, as the two are crafting a new musical that Tom Cruise would star in, fulfilling a longtime dream of his. The third movie is featuring Les Grossman, Cruise’s character from Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder. It’s currently unclear if the movie would be centered around the character or if he would just reprise the role in a separate movie.

And last but not least, there is the movie Tom Cruise has been attached for two years that will be (at least) partially shot in space. Doug Liman is on board to direct, and McQuarrie is apparently helping out with the script. It will be done in collaboration with NASA and Elon Musk’s SpaceX, and will be backed by Universal Pictures. Deadline speculates that this will be the next movie they tackle.

McQuarrie is working on all four scripts, with Cruise also actively working on the movies. No more details are known at this point. The duo will be back on the big screen next year, with Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, due out on July 14, 2023. A trailer was released earlier this year ahead of the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, which McQuarrie also worked on along with Tom Cruise. That movie has now become a billion-dollar hit and just surpassed Titanic at the domestic box office.
