‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Aiming for Cannes 2023 Release

Killers of the Flower Moon

Despite recent reports that the movie could be done in time for the end of the year, it seems like Paramount and Apple are aiming to release Killers of the Flower Moon at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

This comes from Deadline, as they hear that Paramount will give it a full-blown theatrical release before Apple TV+ gets to release the movie on their platform. This is exactly what Quentin Tarantino did with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood… back in 2019, and it ended up working great for them, as the film got 10 Oscar nominations and was a major contender in some of those categories (it also gave Brad Pitt his first Oscar).

In an unexpected plot twist, however, Deadline is also hearing that Apple TV+ may be looking into releasing Emancipation later this year on their platform. The movie was always supposed to be an Awards contender, but after Will Smith’s incident at the Oscars in March, Apple was put in an awkward position, and it was believed that the movie would be pushed back from a 2022 release, at least to avoid the controversy. Smith was believed to be another major contender for this year’s Best Actor category, but after he was banned from the Oscars for a decade by the Academy, it will be interesting to see how this turns out (it should be noted, the actor can still get nominated and win, he just can’t go to the ceremony). Rumors point to Emancipation being Antoine Fuqua’s best film since Training Day.

The Oscar race this year is very packed, which may be why the studios have decided to push off the release of the movie, which could have been the frontrunner in some key categories. Movies that are still scheduled to come out this year include Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, David O. Russell’s Amsterdam, Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, David Fincher’s The Killer (possibly, it hasn’t been confirmed yet), Andrew Dominik’s Blonde, Maria Schrader’s She Said, Florian Zeller’s The Son, Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling, Sam Mendes’ Empire of Light’, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Bardo, Luca Guadagnino’s Bones and All, Jordan Peele’s Nope, Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale, and Noah Baumbach’s White Noise, among many others.

Killers of the Flower Moon would then be joining another set of movies that have fled this year’s Oscar race — they include Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Ari Aster’s Disappointment Blvd., Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, or Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins.
