DC’s ‘Blue Beetle’ Lands Its Director
Blue Beetle will be the first superhero movie starring a Latino character.
According to The Wrap, Angel Manuel Soto will direct the upcoming Blue Beetle for Warner Bros. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala) is writing the screenplay; for now, no actors are attached to star. Blue Beetle’s alter ego will be the Mexican-American teenager Jaime Reyes, the third character to assume that mantle in the comics. Soto confirmed the news to the outlet himself, saying in a statement:
“It is an honor to direct Blue Beetle, the first Latino superhero film for DC. I want to sincerely thank everyone at Warner Bros. and DC for trusting me to bring Jaime Reyes to life. I can’t wait to make history together.”
The film will try to start shooting this fall, which means that casting news should be coming in the next few months. As of this moment, there is no official release date for the project, but 2023 seems like a safe bet. We also don’t know if WB plans to release this in theaters or, as I think, on HBO Max.
Last December, DC Films head Walter Hamada told The New York Times that, starting next year, they will be releasing smaller movies on the streaming platform. He gave examples of movies like Batgirl or Static Shock, and Blue Beetle seems to fit into that category of films.
