‘The Rings of Power’ Main Trailer Hints at Sauron Regaining Power, Reveals Plenty of Familiar Elements

Galadriel in The Rings of Power Main Trailer

After releasing the main teaser last week, Amazon Studios stormed Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con to wow audiences with new footage, insights, and a brand-new trailer for the new series The Rings of Power.

The new teaser strongly hinted at Sauron recovering his strength, and also gave us our first look at the orcs in action, a palantír (which will apparently be our gateway into the First Age), and an all-mighty Balrog! Check it out:

The trailer was revealed during the San Diego Comic-Con panel at Hall H, which just wrapped. Hosted by Stephen Colbert, the panel also had the showrunners and the main actors. Here are some of the highlights, per Empire Magazine’s Twitter feed:

  • Bear McCreary, who was just announced as the composer for the series, was at Hall H conducting an orchestra, playing a theme from the score live (check it out here). He was inspired by Howard Shore’s legendary score for The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
  • JD Payne and Patrick McKay (showrunners) came out on stage speaking Elvish.
  • They talked about how the new series will be a human story of good vs. a new, rising evil.
  • The Fall of Númenor will indeed be heavily present in The Rings of Power.
  • They had long discussions with Tolkien scholars about faithfully adapting Tolkien’s Appendices, while also incorporating real-world myths.
  • The cast talked about their personal experiences: Robert Aramayo (Elrond) about being an orphan, Owain Arthur (Prince Durin IV) about the long hours in the makeup chair, or Sophia Nomvete (Disa) about auditioning two days before giving birth.

Amazon also showed plenty of footage to the attendees at Hall H, besides the trailer. Those clips included:

  • A clip with narration by Galadriel and new action scenes.
  • A clip showing “a test of endurance” between Elrond and Durin.
  • An extended clip showing the meteor crashing on Middle-earth and the Harfoots going to meet The Stranger (also known as Meteor Man).
  • A clip with more action featuring Arondir (played by Ismael Cruz Córdova), orcs, elves, and plenty of fighting.
  • A clip with Galadriel talking about a memorable troll encounter.
  • A clip featuring Galadriel in real danger.

Finally, Amazon has also released a brand-new set of character posters, which you can check out here:

The Rings of Power will debut on Amazon Prime on September 2. The second season is reported to start shooting in early 2023 in the UK.
