Julius Onah to Direct ‘Captain America 4’

Julius Onah

It was reported back in 2021 that Anthony Mackie would star in Captain America 4, but it’s taken until now for Marvel Studios to find its director.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Julius Onah has been hired to direct the fourth movie in the Captain America franchise. Interestingly, Kari Skogland was not picked to direct the film again after she directed each episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which chronicled Sam Wilson’s journey to finally accepting the mantle of Captain America, though there’s no mention of why that was. Malcolm Spellman, the showrunner of that series, will be penning the script alongside Dusan Musson, a staff writer from the show.

Fans will not be particularly excited by Onah’s directing credits, the most prominent of which is The Cloverfield Paradox, a film so widely derided after surprise-releasing on Netflix that it seems to have killed the entire Cloverfield franchise. It’s fair to point out though that the film had so many script and production-related issues that it might be harsh to blame Onah alone for the failed film.

It’s worth noting that his most recent film Luce came out three years ago and was very well received by critics and audiences alike — it has a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score and a 77% audience score — so perhaps Kevin Feige is judging him on his latest work rather than his first high-profile film. If Spellman can give him a good script, then there’s no need to decry his appointment just yet.

There’s still no word on when Captain America 4 will be released or what it’s even about. Aside from Anthony Mackie, no other actors have been revealed, so we don’t know if Sebastian Stan will return as Bucky Barnes… or Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter. It would seem likely that we’ll get that information at Marvel’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con later this month.
