‘The Rings of Power’ Two-Part Premiere Could Be Theatrically Distributed Worldwide

Elrond and Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

In a new livestream, TheOneRing.net is exclusively reporting that Amazon Studios is in negotiations with exhibitors worldwide to give the first two episodes of The Rings of Power, which were directed by J.A. Bayona, a full theatrical release.

To clarify, TheOneRing.net‘s Justin Sewell has heard (11:50) that, following the acquisition of MGM, Amazon has the legal ability to give The Rings of Power a theatrical release. For that reason, they are in talks with theaters from all over the world to give the first two episodes a wide release — in Sewell’s own words:

“We’ve heard that this isn’t just a Fathom Event, you know, at select cinemas on a Tuesday night. […] We’re talking that this will be a regular theatrical rollout, and it is possible because Amazon has purchased MGM and now has some distribution rights.”

Hopefully, a deal will be reached within the next few weeks, and an announcement will be made during the summer, maybe even during San Diego Comic-Con, which, also according to TheOneRing.net, will have an immersive Lord of the Rings experience.

This isn’t the only piece of information to come out of the show. Sewell, who has seen some footage from The Rings of Power, also described the series as very cinematic, much more than other fantasy shows from the last couple of years like The Witcher or Wheel of Time. In terms of more specific information, he said that all the images we’ve seen so far, both from Empire Magazine and Vanity Fair, are from the opening 45 minutes of the show. Moreover, the first picture we saw from the show, the one featuring the Two Trees of Valinor that was released last August along with the September 2nd date announcement (see below), is from one of the opening sequences of the show, within the first fifteen minutes.

Sewell revealed another interesting detail, pertinent to a recent reveal from Empire Magazine. This week, the new cover issue of the magazine revealed the first-ever image of Celebrimbor, the Elven craftsman who forged the Rings of Power. While it hasn’t been long since the picture was released, the Internet has already ripped the show apart, complaining about the character’s look and age. Well, according to Sewell, Celebrimbor, played by Charles Edwards, won’t have a large role in season 1.

After Clifford Broadway speculated that maybe the show doesn’t have a lot of footage of Celebrimbor yet, because he might not be in the series until the second season, Sewell added:

“My Green Dragon gossip on Celebrimbor is that he’s not a major player in season 1. I have heard that the number of shoot days, that the actor was on set as Celebrimbor, was insignificant compared to all the other leads.”

One final detail from Sewell’s intel is that we should expect something from The Rings of Power on Friday. We don’t know exactly what yet, and it may not be a trailer (he didn’t know), but on Thursday the new issue of Empire Magazine is coming out with tons of new content from the show, and on Friday, something else will drop too. There have been rumors lately of a 2-minute trailer being cut and waiting to be released, so we’ll see if that finally happens this Friday.

Amazon has spent a lot of money on this show, and as the release of The Rings of Power comes closer and closer, we should expect one of the biggest marketing campaigns in TV history. These next few months are going to be insane for genre fans, so stay tuned!
