‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special’ Wraps Filming, Will Be Set Between ‘Love & Thunder’ and ‘Vol. 3’

Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special

James Gunn has officially announced that filming on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special wrapped over the weekend.

The Disney Plus event will air this Christmas on the streaming service, and according to the director, it will be set in between Thor: Love and Thunder and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Love and Thunder will come out this July, while Vol. 3 will be released next May, so the release dates will match the chronological order of the stories.

The director also announced that filming on the third Guardians of the Galaxy will wrap this week, exactly one year before the movie is set to be released theatrically:

The third Guardians movie has been holding on to that May 5, 2023, release date for a long time. It was officially announced a year ago, and since then, Marvel Studios has shuffled its calendar several times, but Vol. 3 has never been touched. The most recent shift in the schedule happened last week when The Marvels was pushed back to July 2023 and Ant-Man 3 was moved up to February 2023, since the latter is in a more advanced state in its post-production process.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last time the team hangs out together. Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, as well as Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper as the voices of Groot and Rocket, are all coming back, for both the movie and the Holiday Special. Expected to return in their roles from Vol. 2 are Elizabeth Debicki and Sylvester Stallone, too. Zoe Saldaña is also supposedly back, though there hasn’t been any official word on her yet, and she should not be expected in the Holiday Special. The movie could revolve around the search for Gamora, as we’ve been speculating since Endgame was released in theaters. Moreover, Chukwudi Iwuji (Peacemaker) in a currently unknown role plus Will Poulter as Adam Warlock will be introduced in the movie. A few leaked images from the set today also revealed the new comic-accurate costumes the team will be sporting this time around.

The Holiday Special will be released on Christmas on Disney Plus, and Vol. 3 will be released theatrically on May 5, 2023, if nothing changes.
