Paramount CinemaCon Presentation Highlights ‘Mission: Impossible 7’, ‘Babylon’, ‘Transformers’

Paramount CinemaCon

After the Universal, Disney, WB, NEON, and Sony panels, on Thursday Paramount Pictures grabbed the baton and previewed some of their upcoming titles at CinemaCon. They included the new Mission: Impossible, Dungeons & Dragons, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and Damien Chazelle’s Babylon.

Mission: Impossible 7

The company announced that the new movie will be called Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning — Part 1. Tom Cruise appeared on the panel via a pre-recorded message that he filmed while shooting the eighth installment. Apparently, he was “hanging off an antique biplane, and then it did a barrel roll.” Classic Cruise. Then, they premiered some footage from the seventh movie. Here’s Deadline‘s description of the trailer:

“Your days of fighting for the greater good are over,” says Kittridge.

“This is our chance to control the truth…the concepts of right and wrong for everyone for centuries to come,” continues Kittridge. “You’ve been fighting to save an ideal that doesn’t exist, never did. You need to pick a side.”

There are shots of Venice, the Vatican, Cruise in the desert and lots of fisticuffs: On trains by The White Widow (Vanessa Kirby), headbutting by Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson), and an intense scene of an office getting gassed.

The trailer ends with Cruise’s signature stunt for Part 7, which was revealed extensively at CinemaCon last August.

Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning – Part 1 is set for a theatrical release on July 14, 2023. We have to assume the eighth (and final) installment will be titled Mission: Impossible: Dead Reckoning – Part 2.

Babylon

Damien Chazelle’s latest pic also debuted its first trailer during the presentation, showing off its star-studded cast, including its two leads, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. The movie has been described as The Great Gatsby on steroids, and outlets are now confirming that, saying it is The Great Gatsby meets Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The movie takes place in the transition era between silent movies and talkies. In fact, the trailer has confirmed that Tobey Maguire, who was only reported to be an executive producer until now, is playing Charlie Chaplin. Here’s Variety‘s description of the trailer:

“You know what we have to do… we have to redefine the form,” Pitt’s character. “When I first moved to Hollywood, the stars on all the doors said, ‘No actors and no dogs allowed.’”

Robbie’s character is less worried about her place in showbiz. “You don’t become a star,” she says. “You either are one… or you ain’t.”

Other projects

Paramount also announced the next movie set in the A Quiet Place universe will be a prequel, titled A Quiet Place: Day One. We assume this is the Michael Sarnoski-directed movie. They also screened some footage from the new Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, which will hit theaters June 9, 2023 — the preview included shots of Optimus Prime and Anthony Ramos. Lastly, they showed some footage from the new Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

To cap things off, and as advertised, attendees were treated to the first-ever public screening of Top Gun: Maverick, and the reactions are extremely positive, hailing it as a “perfect summer blockbuster” and one of Tom Cruise’s best films. It finally lands on theaters on May 27.

While Paramount is the last major player with a showing, the last big panel at CinemaCon is Lionsgate’s, which will take place later today.
