‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Delayed to June 2023, Part II Moves to 2024

Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse

Sony officially announced on Wednesday night a shift in the release plans for both parts of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

The first entry was due to be released this October, but has now been delayed until June 2, 2023. The official title of the movie will be Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with no “Part 1“, while Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part II (likely changing its title) will now be released on March 29, 2024. The movies, originally conceived as only one project, will be the continuation of the Miles Morales storyline initiated in 2018’s Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Confirmed to return for the ensemble sequel are Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Jake Johnson as Peter B. Parker, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, and Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara, with Issa Rae as Jessica Drew being confirmed as a new addition to the cast. A spin-off with an ensemble of female characters, which will likely include Steinfeld and Drew, is also said to be in development.

In December, Sony released an early first look at Part One:

Summer 2023 is shaping up to be very packed. In May, right now, these are the movies that are scheduled to be released: Dungeons & Dragons, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Fast X, and The Little Mermaid. The week after The Little Mermaid, Sony is planning to release Across the Spider-Verse, with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts being released the week after. The Flash is now supposed to come out on June 23, two weeks after Transformers, and the fifth Indiana Jones movie, the week after The Flash. But that isn’t the end. In July, Sony would be releasing Madame Web (though it’s possible they delay it to give Spider-Verse more breathing room), followed up by Mission Impossible 7, then Oppenheimer, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania would wrap up July. Blue Beetle and a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated reboot would hit theaters in August.

Expect several release schedule changes as we approach 2023.
