RUMOR: What We’ve Heard Regarding That ‘Avatar 2’ Trailer

The rumor mill claims Avatar 2 will be dropping its first footage sooner rather than later, and we can confirm that’s the plan right now.

Rumors about the first trailer for James Cameron’s long-anticipated sci-fi sequel began swirling exactly one month ago, and specified that Disney was aiming to show a teaser in front of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness screenings. This would’ve made perfect sense in the good ol’ pre-COVID era, back when big studios started marketing their blockbusters sometimes even more than one year before they hit theaters. Nowadays, those cases are much rarer, but certainly not impossible. If we’re talking about Avatar 2, a massive film that’s been delayed several times over the years, it’s likely that Disney wants to give it more time to build up buzz over the summer.

Moving forward to earlier this week, The Hollywood Reporter dropped a juicy article regarding next week’s big CinemaCon event, which will help solidify a return to form for studios and exhibitors after the pandemic. And one of the most interesting bits in that piece mentioned Avatar 2 as one of the locked projects for Disney’s showcase there. This doesn’t come as a surprise, as CinemaCon is aimed at exhibitors instead of the general public, which means meaty previews for blockbusters that still haven’t debuted footage elsewhere do so during the event in order to excite and prepare theater owners for what’s to come.

We’ve reached out to a reliable source to check if they had heard anything regarding a possible trailer drop alongside the Doctor Strange sequel, and the answer, at this moment, is positive. The word out there for theater chains is to get ready for the Avatar 2 marketing campaign, which will start heating up in the coming weeks.

Of course, this means Disney will be showing something outside of CinemaCon. We couldn’t confirm whether we’re talking about a regular teaser or something different (remember “Avatar Day” back in 2009?), but the current plans are what we’ve just described. Mind you, trailer releases shift all the time, and Doctor Strange showings will be housing more than a couple of big movie trailers, so last-minute changes could still happen.
