‘It Takes Two’ Lands at Amazon and Seven Bucks Productions, Dwayne Johnson Producing

It Takes Two

dj2 Entertainment will be teaming up with Amazon and Dwayne Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions to turn GOTY 2021 winner It Takes Two into a film.

Variety has the exclusive, which arrives less than three months after the project was announced by dj2 Entertainment and game developer Hazelight Studios. The current plan is a three-way production between dj2, Amazon Studios, and Seven Bucks Productions. Of course, this means Dwayne Johnson and frequent collaborators Dani and Hiram Garcia will be producing the project, which could also have “The Rock” in one of the lead roles — either Cody, one of the two parents in trouble, or Dr. Hakim, a sassy talking book and love expert (assuming they’ll be following the game’s plot).

It was originally reported that dj2 wanted to tackle either a film or a TV adaptation of It Takes Two, and now we know for certain Amazon has decided to go with a film (Johnson’s presence will surely attract plenty of viewers). The hit video game’s story reads as follows: “May and Cody, as they go through a divorce, find their minds transported into two dolls that their daughter, Rose, made to represent them. Now they must go on a wild and fantastical journey to find a way to get back into their bodies.” Due to the nature of the plot and the game’s many colorful settings, it’s reasonable to expect a CGI/animation-heavy adventure.

Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are adapting the game while serving as executive producers too. Dmitri M. Johnson and Dan Jevons produce for dj2, while Stephan Bugaj of dj2 executive produces. Josef Fares and Oskar Wolontis of Hazelight Studios, which developed the original game, will also executive produce. Kimberly Bialek will oversee production on behalf of Seven Bucks Productions.

Additionally, dj2 has a first-look deal with Amazon, as do Casey and Miller, which means more game adaptations coming from the company could easily find a home in Amazon’s streaming service — earlier this week, we learned that Streets of Rage was next in line for dj2.
