Will Ferrell Joins Margot Robbie in the Upcoming ‘Barbie’ Movie From Greta Gerwig

Will Ferrell is joining the stacked cast of the upcoming Barbie movie, starring Margot Robbie in the titular role.

From The Hollywood Reporter, Ferrell will apparently be playing the CEO of a toy company which could or could not be Mattel. He joins a long list of talented actors that includes Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Emma Mackey, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, and America Ferrera. Greta Gerwig is directing, and is a co-writer on the project along with her husband, Noah Baumbach. Production is already underway.

Warner Bros. will be distributing. Robbie is also a producer on the project via her banner LuckyChap, as well as Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner and Paddington producer David Heyman.

Ferrell has been taking a break from features over the past couple of years — the last time he starred in a movie was in 2020’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. He was last seen in the Apple TV Plus series The Shrink Next Door, with Paul Rudd. While having him in a Barbie movie may seem a bit odd at first, it seems like a natural fit once you realize he will be playing the CEO of a company and could end up being the antagonist of the story.

Gerwig and Baumbach have apparently received a lot of creative control from the studio, which should help when crafting a movie that could easily be seen as controversial and damaging towards women and the standards to which they are held on a daily basis. We also hope Ferrell is given a more nuanced role than the standard two-dimensional evil character, should he be playing that role anyways.

No release date has been announced yet, but a late 2023 premiere is more than possible if the studio is satisfied with the final product and wants to give it an awards push.
