James Gunn Discusses the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’, Says It Is the Best Thing He’s Ever Done
While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is still a year away, fans of the franchise will get a small taste of James Gunn’s insanity later this year, when Disney Plus exclusively debuts the new Holiday Special.
The project was announced in December 2020 by Kevin Feige, and has gone under the radar ever since for most MCU fans. It is currently shooting, after Volume 3 wrapped production a few weeks ago, and director James Gunn has recently made some comments that may increase the hype around the Disney Plus special.
Speaking to Radio Times, the director said this is the best thing he’s ever done, and everyone is in love with it (something he also said to Collider a few weeks ago):
“The Holiday Special is the greatest thing I’ve ever done in my life.
It’s totally ridiculous, and every day we can’t believe that we’re making it. We all completely love it. It is unlike anything that anyone’s ever seen before. I can’t wait for people to see it.
And it’s out pretty soon. You know, it’s out this Christmas. It’s not like people have to wait that long.”
Over the weekend, Gunn also confirmed on Twitter the new project will introduce more than one character to the MCU:

This might be reminiscent of the Star Wars Holiday Special to our fans of the galaxy far, far away. That was a television special that debuted in 1978 and introduced Boba Fett for the first time to audiences. In fact, speaking of Star Wars, many fans have already been speculating the Guardians special may introduce Mark Hamill to the MCU. This was fueled by the actor replying last year to a tweet from James Gunn about the special, saying “I have a very bad feeling about this.”

Hamill’s tweet should probably be taken as a fun reference to his Star Wars Holiday Special that was an absolute disaster back in the 70s, and everyone involved will admit as much. To see if there is more to it, we’ll have to wait until late 2022.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is not the only television special from Marvel Studios coming out this year, as none other than composer Michael Giacchino has been hired to direct a Halloween Special, starring Gael García Bernal, that would supposedly be centered around the Werewolf by Night character. We are still waiting for official word on that project from the studio though.
No release date has been set for the Holiday Special, but it will probably debut on Disney Plus in December 2022.
