‘Euphoria’ Star Sydney Sweeney Joins Dakota Johnson in ‘Madame Web’

Euphoria and The White Lotus actress Sydney Sweeney has joined the cast of Sony’s Madame Web.

Deadline has learned that Sweeney, after considering several offers from different projects, finally decided that joining Johnson in the first female-centric movie from Sony’s Multiverse of Marvel Characters was “too good to pass up”. We still don’t know who she will be playing. The actress may be one of the hottest names in town after delivering two great performances in the aforementioned HBO shows.

Another interesting bit of information is the fact that, according to Deadline‘s sources, the project may suffer some changes from the initial premise, as having an elderly woman connected to a life-support system is not exactly appealing to comic-book movie extravaganza. She is seen by the studio as their own version of Doctor Strange.

S.J. Clarkson will be directing the script from Matt Sazama (Gods of Egypt) and Burk Sharpless (The Last Witch Hunter). Kerem Sanga wrote a previous draft.

The third movie in Sony’s universe, Morbius, will debut in a few weeks. The previous two entries, both Venom movies, have been very successful for the studio — the first one crossed the $800M line at the worldwide box office, and the second one, made over $500M in spite of the pandemic. The studio has many other projects in the pipeline, including a third Venom movie which would be in development, a Spider-Woman film from Olivia Wilde, and a Silk TV series that was due to start filming late last year.

Sweeney is currently filming Tony Tost’s National Anthem, and will next be seen in Amazon’s The Voyeurs and Blumhouse’s Nocturne. It is unknown when Madame Web will start filming, but with two actresses already attached, the project is certainly gaining some momentum and could start rolling cameras as soon as this summer.
