‘The Boys’: Season 3 Trailer Arrives, Spin-off Filming Next Month, Season 4 Filming Late 2022

The Boys Season 3

The third season of The Boys will hit Prime Video on June 3rd.

The excellent teaser trailer arrived over the weekend during a panel at the South by Southwest festival (SXSW), delivering the perfect introduction to the new season, which promises to be crazier than ever. And that’s a pretty high bar. Check it out:

The song that plays over the trailer is the yet-to-be-released Bones, from Imagine Dragons’ upcoming Mercury — Act 2. The trailer also offered us the first look at Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy, the show’s version of Captain America. But the main takeaway from the trailer is probably the fact that Billy Butcher, Karl Urban’s character, now has powers. This was something the cast was not allowed to discuss during the panel at SXSW.

During the panel, star Karl Urban said this may be the craziest season yet. Per The Hollywood Reporter, when talking about a specific moment from the trailer, he said the following:

“I promise you have never seen anything like it in the history of cinema. We went bigger this season. It’s a fun intense roller coaster ride.”

Showrunner Eric Kripke added the following:

“[The scene is] in the first 10 minutes. It’s not just the craziest thing we’ve done, I think it’s the craziest thing anybody has ever done.”

Kripke also revealed that Black Noir will be removing his mask for the first time this season. He added that the new season is about the COVID-19 pandemic “in a subtle way”. He added:

“And [about how] totally unprepared [the Trump] administration was. It’s like how Homelander (Antony Starr) is always more concerned with how something looks rather than solving the problem … It’s about how certain leaders need to front as macho. We’re watching the world edge towards World War III right now because there’s a guy with a tiny dick trying to do a thing.”

Ackles also weighed in, saying the following about the new season:

“Reading that script was quite eye opening. They somehow managed to tackle Herogasm [a storyline from the comics about a superhero orgy]. How they managed to do that I won’t say but … holy shit.”

Kripke then capped it off by saying that the announced college spin-off series will begin filming next month:

“It’s still untitled. We’re trying to not at all repeat ourselves but have it all in the same world. It’s about superhero kids in school and it’s realistic and gritty but like ‘The Boys’ is about cops and robbers, in a way, and the college show is a relationship show, but with our spin, so there’s weird sex and all sorts of drugs.”

In a separate interview with Variety, during the film festival, Urban confirmed they intend to film the fourth season of the show later this year:

“I’m shooting ‘The Boys’ through the end of the year.”

This is the first we’ve heard about a fourth season, but we’re certainly not surprised. The show is now one of Prime Video’s flagship IPs and, until The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power comes around, might be their biggest show in terms of views.
