William Hurt

Academy Award-winner William Hurt passed away today at 71.

His son announced the tragic news by posting the following message:

“It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winning actor, on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, among family, of natural causes. The family requests privacy at this time.”

The actor was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar three years in a row, between 1986-1988, and then again in 2006. He won in 1986 for the movie Kiss of the Spider Woman. The next year he was nominated for Children of a Lesser God, and lost to Paul Newman for The Color of Money, and then in 1988, he was nominated for Broadcast News, and lost to Michael Douglas for Wall Street. Those are among the two most iconic male performances of the 1980s. In 2006, he was nominated for A History of Violence, and lost to George Clooney in Syriana. He was also nominated for two Emmys, in 2009 (Best Supporting Actor) and in 2011 (Best Actor).

While he was an established actor by the 1980s and 1990s, he may be known to most modern audiences as the actor who played General Ross in The Incredible Hulk, who then was promoted to Secretary of State Ross in Captain: America Civil War, Black Widow, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

Other iconic projects of his include 1981’s Body Heat, 1998’s Lost in Space, or M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village (2004). He also played Duke Leto Atreides in the 2000 Dune miniseries adaptation.

He is survived by four children. May he rest in peace.
