‘Barbie’ Movie Enlists Kate McKinnon and Simu Liu
Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is enlarging its cast.
According to Deadline, Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon is jumping aboard the Greta Gerwig-directed project. The news came out a few days after The Hollywood Reporter said that Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu is also in negotiations to star in the live-action adaptation. America Ferrera is also appearing in the project, though no plot details are known at the moment, and it is unknown who these actors will be playing.
Robbie will play the titular character, as well as produce the movie via the LuckyChap banner. Gosling will be playing Ken. Gerwig co-wrote the screenplay along with her husband, Noah Baumbach. The producers list is rounded up with LuckyChap’s Tom Ackerley, Mattel’s Robbie Brenner, and David Heyman of Heyday Films. LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara and Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz will executive produce the project.
Simu Liu is of course mostly known for his role as the titular character in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He also appeared in Kim’s Convenience. McKinnon, senior Saturday Night Live actress, is trying to expand her career by taking on more serious roles. She did that in 2019’s Bombshell, also with Margot Robbie, and could very well be doing it again here.
So far, the cast and crew assembled for this movie are top tier, and we could look at a potential awards contender in 2024. With the movie gaining some momentum at the moment, production could begin in a few months, thus possibly eyeing a late 2023 release. This is pure speculation for now, so we’ll keep you updated.
Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is The Lord of the Rings, but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as authors like Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
