‘Blade Runner 2099’ Live-Action Series in the Works at Amazon, Ridley Scott Attached

Blade Runner

Blade Runner 2049 is getting a continuation at Amazon Prime, in television format.

Deadline is now reporting that Amazon Studios is planning a Blade Runner 2099 series, set 50 years after the events of Denis Villeneuve’s movie, which was of course set 40 years after Ridley Scott’s original movie. Scott is executive producing the project via his Scott Free Productions banner, and Shining Girls‘ Silka Luisa is writing and also executive producing. A writers room is currently being put together. Sources tell Deadline that, should the series move forward, Scott might consider directing it. The project is being fast-tracked. No actors are attached at this stage.

The news is not exactly shocking, though it is still nice to hear, as Scott had already told BBC in November 2021 that a live-action series set in the Blade Runner world was in the works, with the pilot written and the show bible already put together. Today, we learned about Amazon’s involvement, as well as the title, which suggests a clear timeline.

Denis Villeneuve’s movie definitely left the door open for a threequel, with Mackenzie Davis’ character teasing a revolution to come. However, the time jump suggests we will not have any returning actors from 2049, and we might only hear about what happened afterwards through references sprinkled throughout the show.

Amazon Studios and Alcon Entertainment are producing the show. Additional executive producers include Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson of Alcon Entertainment, David W. Zucker of Scott Free, Ben Roberts, Cynthia Yorkin, and Clayton Krueger, as well as Blade Runner 2049 screenwriter Michael Green.

Blade Runner 2049 was considered a critical hit, with five Oscar nominations and two wins, as well as an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it lost the studio tens of millions, as it only made $259M worldwide on a $150M production budget plus marketing costs.

This is not the only television series Ridley Scott is overseeing this year, as FX and Hulu’s Alien series, from Noah Hawley, is set to go into production this spring.
