Second ‘Lightyear’ Trailer Promises an Epic Space Odyssey

Pixar's Lightyear - Trailer 2

The second trailer for Pixar’s Lightyear, starring Chris Evans, has landed, and it’s looking like the studio’s most exciting adventure in quite some time.

The film, which was unveiled during Disney’s Investor Day 2020, released its first look last October, so a longer, meatier trailer that expanded on what’s actually going on in this bold animated feature was due. And it’s safe to say it doesn’t disappoint. Check it out below:

It’s great to see Pixar doubling down on the promise of making an all-out space adventure full of excitement and rich worldbuilding, plus they seem to be taking their (already amazing) visuals to the next level. Once again, the preview is accompanied by a remixed, epic version of David Bowie’s “Starman”, one of the late musician’s most legendary songs. By the way, that robo-cat has to be one of the weirdest Pixar side characters in recent memory.

Lightyear focuses on Buzz Lightyear’s journey through Star Command, not unlike the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command cartoon series that aired briefly between August 2000 and January 2001. This film will give us a greater look at the kind of character that spawned legions of Buzz Lightyear toys in the Toy Story universe. For the first time, the character will not be voiced by traditional Buzz voice actor Tim Allen; instead, he will be voiced by Chris Evans. The former Avenger is joined by Keke Palmer (Scream Queens), Dale Soules (Orange Is the New Black), and Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit). Other members of the voice cast include Uzo Aduba, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez, and Isiah Whitlock Jr.

Angus MacLane is directing; he’s been in the Pixar family for several decades, and co-directed Finding Dory back in 2016. Lightyear is scheduled to hit theaters on June 17, 2022. Pixar’s next movie, though, will be Turning Red, coming out March 11 on Disney Plus — this recent change has (understandably) upset animation fanatics and Pixar workers alike. For now, it appears that Lightyear carries enough IP weight to secure heavy bags of box office money, making it an attractive theatrical release for the House of the Mouse.
