‘Scream 6’ Has Been Greenlit, Will Film This Summer

Scream
Paramount and Spyglass are wasting no time with their continuation of the Scream franchise. Following the success of the fifth film, a sixth movie is set to begin shooting this year.

The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that a sequel to Scream (2022) is in the pipeline from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (who form a team called “Radio Silence” alongside Chad Villella) and writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, the same team who put their skills to use with last month’s franchise revival. Filming is expected to begin in Summer, which most likely means that the next installment will be ready for next year. Radio Silence issued the following statement to accompany this announcement:

“Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators – and in the lineage Wes [Craven] and Kevin [Williamson] so expertly built – has been the thrill of a lifetime, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life.”

Although no cast members have been officially confirmed, One Take News is reporting that Neve Campbell, the Scream Queen herself, is set to make another appearance. Talks have reportedly been underway for a while for the Sidney Prescott actress to find herself in yet another murderous mess. Casting has been an ongoing process and it is likely that several names will be officially revealed soon, since production starts this Summer.

The success of Scream (2022) follows the previous attempt at a revival in Scream 4, the final film from director Wes Craven and writer Kevin Williamson. (Williamson executive produced the fifth film and is returning to that role for the sixth.) That slasher unfortunately saw disappointing returns (though it was still profitable), believed to be in part due to the Scary Movie spoof franchise cannibalizing the market, and that slowed plans for future films in the series until recently. While the movie is somewhat divisive among fans of the franchise, it has since become something of a cult classic, paving the way for a more well-received follow-up. Thankfully, this movie has performed very well despite challenges from the still-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Scream is currently playing in theaters.
