‘Moon Knight’ Releases First Trailer

Moon Knight
Marvel Studios has revealed the first trailer for their Moon Knight series on Disney Plus, starring Oscar Isaac as the titular hero.

The trailer gives us our first look at Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector, donning Moon Knight’s classic hooded white suit and cape, outlining the basics of his origin story as he fights bad guys at night.

Moon Knight will give us the MCU’s first superhero with a mental illness. Previous teasers had already given us glimpses of Oscar Isaac putting on some interesting accents, and that is because Marc Spector suffers from dissociative identity disorder (DID). When not dressed up as Moon Knight, Spector uses his four other identities to gather information in places that his superhero alter ego can’t infiltrate.

In the source material, those personalities traditionally include a billionaire businessman called Steven Grant, a cab driver called Jake Lockley, a red-haired little girl called Inner Child, and a suited consultant simply called Mr. Knight. Isaac is no stranger to huge franchises, considering his role in Star Wars, but it is easy to see how the possibility of playing as many as five or six different personalities over the course of an entire series could have enticed him into joining the MCU.

In the comics, Moon Knight follows the story of Marc Spector, former marine and CIA agent who becomes a extremely skilled and highly paid mercenary. After nearly getting killed by a fellow mercenary, Spector is brought to the unearthed tomb of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu while he clings to life. Khonshu revives Spector as he passes away, wishing him to become the “moon’s knight,” redeeming himself and his life of morally ambiguous violence by henceforth protecting the innocent.

Many believe that Moon Knight is the closest hero Marvel has to Batman. While their origin stories are wildly different, both heroes have no traditional “superpowers,” instead using their riches and superb fighting skills to combat criminals at night. And, while both heroes prefer to operate at night, Batman dresses in black and keeps to the shadows, only revealing himself when he’s ready to strike — Moon Knight wears white and likes his enemies to see him coming. Those are two very different ways of striking fear into the hearts of their enemies.

We will see just how closely the Batman comparison holds in the Moon Knight Disney Plus series, which will debut in March. It looks like one of the darkest projects Marvel Studios has made so far, which makes sense with the likes of Blade on the horizon and Daredevil coming back into the fold. Moon Knight could be the first MCU project to really step away from that tried and tested Marvel formula, although Eternals already took some big swings.
