‘Sonic 2’ Adds Idris Elba as Knuckles
Sonic 2 is racing towards cinema screens next year, and shooting is done, but the film hadn’t found its Knuckles yet.
After many rumors which pointed at certified badasses such as Dwayne Johnson or Jason Momoa, Jeff Fowler’s second Sonic the Hedgehog installment has found its Knuckles in Idris Elba, who certainly is a certified badass and recently starred in The Suicide Squad. The actor himself confirmed the news via Twitter:

Knuckles is a red anthropomorphic short-beaked echidna who is determined and serious. In the original games, he has the ability to glide and climb up walls, and is a powerful fighter with spiked hands. He serves as the guardian of the Master Emerald, a huge gemstone that controls the series’ integral Chaos Emeralds (think of Infinity Stones), and is the last living member of his race.
Knuckles’ debut was in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994) after Doctor Eggman tricks him into opposing Sonic and Tails. This could be a plot point in the film, as Jim Carrey’s Robotnik (Eggman is his nickname) ended up, by the end of the first flick, in an unknown mushroom world determined to get back to Earth and exact revenge on Sonic. Tails also showed up in a post-credits scene and has been confirmed to be in the second installment for a long time, so it all could click together very easily.
Sonic 2 is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on April 8, 2022, although this could change if the Delta variant of COVID-19, which is currently giving most countries a lot of trouble, forces a new wave of delays and shuffles the release calendar. We’re not out of the woods yet.
