Chloe Bennet Exits CW’s ‘Powerpuff’

Chloe Bennet in Agents of SHIELD

Chloe Bennet has abandoned CW’s troubled series.

The news arrived yesterday via Variety, who claim “scheduling conflicts forced her to exit.” The show had already shot a pilot which was turned down by the network — the series was now being reworked. Bennet was set to play Blossom, one of the leads. Sources say the search for the missing Powerpuff Girl will begin in the fall.

Dove Cameron remains attached to the show as Bubbles, and so does Yana Perrault as Buttercup. Other cast members in the original pilot included Donald Faison as Professor Drake Utonium, Nicholas Podany as the son of the original animated series’ main villain (Mojo Jojo), and Robyn Lively as Sara Bellum. Talks are currently ongoing for them to return as well, but I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them jumped ship as well, since the project appears to be terribly ill-fated and misguided.

Powerpuff was first announced back in August 2020. It’s based on the Cartoon Network series Powerpuff Girls, created by Craig McCracken, and sees the legendary superheroes as disillusioned women in their twenties who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. The original pilot was deemed to be too “edgy” and “campy” even by CW boss Mark Pedowitz, which is kind of worrying coming from a network that has put out shows like Arrow and The Flash. Maybe this one should stay in the drawer.
