Apple’s ‘Foundation’ TV Series Finally Gets a Full Trailer

Foundation

Apple TV+ has a finally debuted a full trailer for their upcoming Foundation series.

Apple’s streaming service might not be making the tech giant as much money as it hoped for, but they sure are trying their best to bring huge productions to the small screen. Among them is the much-anticipated adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s renowned literary saga The Foundation, whose core books are typically regarded as one of the genre’s undisputable masterpieces.

Last year, after production was halted due to COVID-19, Apple shared a first look at the series, including both BTS footage and some bits from the actual show. It looked stunning, and they promised a 2021 release date which they’re confirming now with the release of a proper trailer:

Once again, this looks like one of the most expensive TV series in recent memory, plus the cinematography on display here feels quite clean and adequate for Asimov’s sci-fi universe. Let’s hope the writing is up to par, too.

David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel) and Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds, Avatar 2) created the series, with Goyer acting as the sole showrunner for now. The ten-episode first season has been directed by Alex Graves (Game of Thrones, Homeland), Roxann Dawson (House of Cards, The Americans), Jennifer Phang (Riverdale, The Boys), and Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman, Ghost in the Shell). The cast is spearheaded by Jared Harris (The Terror, Chernobyl) and Lee Pace (The Hobbit, Halt and Catch Fire), among others.

The story is told from the perspective of psychohistorian Hari Seldon (Harris), a scholar in a new field that combines psychology and science to predict the future using mathematics. The major conflict in the story is Seldon’s awareness, through his study of psychohistory, that the Galactic Empire is failing; a reality that few other people, particularly those in charge, want to admit.

It’s not clear how many of Asimov’s Foundation novels (it’s a sizeable saga) the show is planning to span, but since it’s not a mini-series, it’s safe to say Apple is in this for the long haul… if the viewership and subscription numbers are good enough. The series debuts on September 24, roughly a month before another sci-fi epic hits theaters and (presumably) HBO Max: Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated film adaptation of Dune — it was delayed three days ago to October 22 from a previous October 1 release date.
