‘Fast & Furious 9’ Gets New Trailer

Nathalie Emmanuel and Vin Diesel in Fast & Furious 9

Universal Pictures has released a second trailer for Fast & Furious 9, offering a greater look at Dom’s brother, played by John Cena.

The trailer offers a deeper look at Jakob Toretto’s motivations and a glimpse at his relationship with Charlize Theron’s villain Cipher, who reprises her role from Fast & Furious 8. Of course, it also acts as an excellent sizzle reel for the epic action scenes which take place throughout the film.

The trailer starts out pretty normal. Dom’s family and friends are all together enjoying some barbeque and downtime, before Dom’s brother Jakob arrives on the scene. He claims that, despite Dom’s love of and loyalty to family, his brother abandoned him long ago. Now he wants revenge. Presumably, the film will show us whether Dom made a mistake in his past or was actually right to cut ties with his younger brother, who appears to be working for Cipher. Charlize Theron’s villain from the previous film is also back and looking to get revenge on Dom and his fam.

The trailer provides plenty bombastic action and chase scenes through cities, and it would have you believe that the main gimmick this time is the use of powerful magnets to push cars out of the way this time. However, the very end of the trailer appears to tease everyone’s favorite family is indeed going to space (as past rumors have suggested). Hopefully, confirmation of that will be saved for the actual film and not fully spoiled in trailers and TV spots before the release date.

All the regular cast will be joining Vin Diesel once again, except for Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, who recently starred in their own spinoff film: Hobbs & Shaw (though Helen Mirren makes an appearance in this film as Magdalene Shaw). Among the new cast members joining John Cena are Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Amber Sienna. This will be Sienna’s first major motion picture, as she looks to ape fellow British model Cara Delevingne and transition from model to actress.

Fast & Furious 9 has been directed by Justin Lin, who returns to the franchise after saying goodbye in 2013 with the sixth installment. The film is currently slated for release in theatres on July 8, 2021.
