Borderlands is getting even nuttier with the addition of Krieg the Psycho.

Last week we learned that Love and Monsters‘ Ariana Greenblatt was joining the Borderlands party as Tiny Tina, the little girl who likes to play with explosives. Now we have word via THR that her protector will be around too.

Creed II‘s Florian Munteanu, who played Viktor Drago in that film, is in final negotiations to join the Eli Roth-directed video game adaptation. He will play Krieg, a human mutant and psychologically unstable warrior who has been abused his entire life. Krieg debuted as a playable character in a downloadable content piece for Borderlands 2. In the game’s story, he eventually comes across Tiny Tina, who wishes to learn from him how to behave like a bandit.

Eli Roth said the following about Krieg and casting Munteanu:

“Florian brings real humanity and multiple layers to a character who on the surface seems totally insane and brutally savage… Krieg was by far the most difficult role to cast, and Florian brought him to life and grounded him in a way that I didn’t know was possible. He’s going to be a brilliant Krieg and will fit in perfectly with our incredible cast.”

THR is also commenting that the production start date is currently scheduled for mid-April. Filming will majorly take place in Hungary.

The latest draft of Borderlands comes from the two-time Emmy-winning screenwriter Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), who is also currently developing scripts for HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation. Avi Arad and Ari Arad are producing through their Arad Productions banner, with Erik Feig also producing through Picturestart. James Myers and Aaron Edmonds are overseeing the project on behalf of Lionsgate, and Emmy Yu is overseeing the film for Arad Productions. Additionally, Lucy Kitada and Royce Reeves-Darby are overseeing the project for Picturestart.
