‘The Talisman’ Series Finally Happening, Spielberg and Duffer Bros. to Produce

Talisman

The Talisman has been dusted off.

Last Friday, THR dropped the exclusive that an adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s The Talisman was happening after almost 40 years of waiting. Quickly afterwards, Amblin confirmed the news.

In 1982, Steven Spielberg fell in love with the book and acquired the screen rights as fast as he humanly could. For years, he tried to crack the story for a film adaptation, but it seems like it will finally happen as a long-form TV series.

Of course, Spielberg is way busier now than he was back in ’82, so he has assembled a pretty convincing team of collaborators to get this off the ground. Stranger Things‘ Duffer brothers, who are still working on Season 4 due to COVID-19 setbacks, will executive produce. Helping them will be Curtis Gwinn, who also served as writer and executive producer on the hit Netflix show. Amblin TV and Paramount Television Studios are producing in association with Netflix, and the Duffers’ Monkey Massacre Productions is boarding the project as well.

The Talisman, an instant best-seller when it first hit stores in 1984, tells the story of Jack Sawyer, a 12-year-old boy who sets on an epic road trip to save his dying mother’s life. He looks for the legendary Talisman, a powerful relic that can heal his mother and (surprisingly) also save the world. Sawyer’s journey takes him across two realities: the America we know and the Territories, a dangerous fantasy-like reflection.
