‘Terminator’ Anime Targeting Netflix

Terminator

Terminator hasn’t fired its last shot.

For many fans, Dark Fate was the best of the followups to Terminator 2. That was no hard task, as T3, Salvation (which had some neat ideas), and Genisys missed the mark by a lot. With Cameron behind the wheel as hands-on producer (plus working on the story) and Deadpool‘s Tim Miller delivering solid action, Dark Fate at least felt like a competent sci-fi action film which was willing to let go of the franchise’s burdens. Even though its structure and some story beats felt a bit too familiar, it took some big swings that pissed off a fair number of die-hard fans. In the box office, the film slumped, despite the solid critical reception, with just $261 million worldwide on a massive $185 million production budget. It was time to terminate Terminator… at least on the big screen.

Now we’re getting word that Netflix and Skydance are planning to reactivate the franchise with an anime series to be produced by Ghost in the Shell‘s Production I.G. The bit of news was officially confirmed on Twitter by Netflix:

Mattson Tomlin, who recently wrote Netflix’s Project Power and worked on Matt Reeves’ The Batman, will act as showrunner and executive produce the series, which has no definite plot for now. He said the following about the project:

“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart… I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach ‘Terminator’ in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”

Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, president and CEO of Production I.G, also seems to be really excited about working on the Terminator franchise:

“I asked my long-time friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of turning the ‘Terminator’ into an animated series… His response was ‘Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?’ At that instant, I was confident we should get onboard. As huge fans, our team at Production I.G is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!”

At this point, it feels like the folks at Netflix are ordering a new animated series every week. We recently learned about Skull Island and Tomb Raider, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
