Don Cheadle’s War Machine Will Appear in ‘The Falcon And The Winter Soldier’

War Machine

Don Cheadle has let slip that War Machine will be making an appearance in the upcoming The Falcon and The Winter Soldier Disney+ series.

We haven’t yet had direct confirmation on which characters will be returning for the series outside of the titular characters and Daniel Brühl, who is reprising his role as Baron Zemo from Captain America: Civil War. Meanwhile, Batroc the Leaper from Captain America: The Winter Soldier has been rumored to return.

With War Machine getting his own Disney+ series in Armor Wars, we didn’t expect him to show up in another project before then. Don Cheadle let slip that James Rhodes would be returning on the Post-Credit podcast:

That’s some of the fun of the MCU, that we all get to show up in each other’s stories, and there are ways that we’re cross-platforming these characters, and they become storylines, sometimes, in the movies. And then these storylines in the movies become storylines in the shows.

It’s really a fun and interesting and, by all imagination, completely open-ended — this can go anywhere. It’s great, I can’t wait to get in the room with the writers and figure out how all those things [connecting Armor Wars to the MCU] happen. You know, Rhodey shows up in Winter Soldier and Falcon’s show. So, it can be a lot.

Cheadle also revealed that his appearance will be one of many opportunities to explore Rhodes’ character further following the death of Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame, and that Armor Wars in particular will explore how Rhodey moves forward without his best friend.

The death of Tony Stark, I’m pretty sure, will play a role in the series. Where we’ve been sort of progressing Rhodey—even in the last film where he’s now up again and he’s now walking again and he’s now mobile again—so as the technology continues to develop and we keep making innovations in the suit and what happens, I imagine there’s gonna be another elevation and another way that we’re going to keep digging into that part of Rhodey.

But really, figuring out a way to bridge what’s happening in the comic books with what’s happening on screen in the MCU and how we’re going to make those worlds work, that’s really exciting.

It’s likely that Marvel are not pleased that War Machine’s appearance in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier has been spoiled like this, but it’s not like Cheadle is the first to leak minor plot details to the press ahead of a new Marvel project – Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland are both infamous for accidentally leaking details to the public, and both are still pretty important to Marvel’s plans going forward.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier will premiere on Disney+ on March 19, 2021, shortly after the conclusion of WandaVision.
