‘Skull Island’ and ‘Tomb Raider’ Anime Series Coming to Netflix

Skull Island and Tomb Raider are Netflix’s next big animation bets.

Yesterday, Netflix unveiled two new animated shows which are now in development for the platform: Skull Island and Tomb Raider. This backs up last year’s claim by the streaming giant: anime series are lucrative.

Skull Island will be another chapter of Legendary’s MonsterVerse, which is putting out Godzilla vs. Kong in March. The plot will follow a group of shipwrecked characters trying to survive the most dangerous place on Earth. Brian Duffield (UnderwaterThe Babysitter) is writing and executive producing. Powerhouse Animation, the studio behind Netflix’s Castlevania and Blood of Zeus, is handling the project. Let’s hope it looks more like the former.

The Tomb Raider anime is supposedly picking up after the events of the most recent video game trilogy, which ended with 2018’s Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the famous game franchise, recently revealed that they want to unify the “reboot trilogy” and the original games, which featured a more seasoned Lara Croft. Maybe this TV series will act as a bridge of sorts? Anyhow, Tasha Huo (The Witcher: Blood OriginRed Sonja) will write and executive produce, along with dj2 Entertainment founder and CEO Dmitri M. Johnson (Sonic the Hedgehog).

As stated before, Netflix is making big bucks with these animated shows; the company said that over 100 million households globally watched at least one anime title on the platform between October 2019 and September 2020. Last October, Netflix also expanded its roster of anime suppliers by signing production deals with Anima & Company, Science Saru, Mappa, and Studio Mir.
