Pixar Developing Buzz Lightyear Film With Chris Evans

Buzz Lightyear in Lightyear

Pixar has announced that they are making a Buzz Lightyear film, simply called Lightyear.

Rather than focusing on the beloved toy from the Toy Story films, this film will be about the in-universe inspiration for that toy, giving the character an origin story.

Lightyear will focus on Buzz Lightyear’s journey through Star Command, not unlike the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command cartoon series that aired briefly between August 2000 and January 2001. This film will give us a greater look at the kind of character that spawned legions of Buzz Lightyear toys in the Toy Story universe.

For the first time, Buzz Lightyear will not be voiced by traditional Buzz voice actor Tim Allen; instead, he will be voiced by Chris Evans, who announced his great pleasure on Twitter. Evans seems a great fit for the role, as Buzz Lightyear’s ethics and morality are remarkably similar to that of Captain America, who he played to great effect for eight years.

As Pixar announced, Lightyear will be arriving in theatres on June 17, 2022. No plot details or other cast members have been announced, but we would hope to see the return of Zurg as Buzz’s evil nemesis.
