‘Borat’ Sequel to Land on Prime Video in Late October

Borat 2 will be exclusive to Prime Video subscribers right before Election Day.

Deadline is exclusively reporting that Amazon Studios has acquired the rights to distribute Borat: Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan, the sequel to the 2006 hit Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, starring Sacha Baron Cohen in the title role.

We are now learning a bit more every day about how this movie came to be. Apparently, shooting commenced the day after unions were in agreement on the return to filming, and was shot with a minimal crew and in the most surreptitious way possible. According to Deadline‘s sources, once again Baron Cohen risked his life multiple times during filming, to the point that during two days of shooting he even had to wear a bulletproof vest.

The intention was to keep the film under wraps as long as possible, but word got out right before production was wrapped and the film was shown to buyers. When it comes to the distribution, the team behind the movie thought the best way to handle it was to sell it to a streaming platform so that they could premiere it right before Election Day on November 3, as it was always planned, and with the advantage that people all over the globe would be able to watch it on the same day. With the current worldwide situation, this was the best option to show the movie to everybody.

In addition, today we might have just had the first entry in what could become a very unusual marketing campaign, as a Twitter account under the name of Republic of Kazakhstan, created on Sunday, posted a message congratulating Trump on his win over Biden in the first U.S. presidential debate. The trick is that the tweet was posted 45 minutes before the debate even began. Also, it features several images focused on Donald Trump with Borat himself adulating the president, with some clear irony going on. Check it out by yourself:
