‘Borat 2’ Has Apparently Already Been Shot
Quite honestly, I would have been shocked if the news was that a studio was considering making Borat 2. Well, apparently they went way beyond that.
Collider is exclusively reporting that a sequel to 2006’s Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan has been shot, and some select people in the industry have already seen it. This comes a few weeks after a video of its lead actor, Sacha Baron Cohen, shooting a scene in a car in Los Angeles as the iconic titular character.
As of yet, there is no word on who is financing or distributing the project, although Collider speculates that it is a “deep-pocketed streamer.” We must remember the studio behind the first movie was 20th Century Fox. Disney would most likely not be interested in investing money on something like this, and there is also the possibility that Baron Cohen still had some ownership of the IP, since it was based on a character created by himself for the British comedy Da Ali G Show.
Plot details are unknown at this moment, but Collider has confirmed that in this new movie Borat is no longer an unknown Kazakh TV personality, so he must go undercover to do his interviews. They have a source that describes the project as “Cohen playing Borat playing Cohen,” while other has denied this description.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan was released in 2006. It was directed by Larry Charles, from a script written by Sacha Baron Cohen, who also played the main character. It made $262 million worldwide on an $18 million budget.
A release date for Borat 2 has yet to be announced.
