Live Action ‘Aladdin’ Sequel in the Works

Disney has given the green light on an Aladdin sequel.

The Disney live action blockbuster Aladdin, is getting the sequel treatment, according to a new report from The Hollywood ReporterGuy Ritchie is reported to return to direct the follow-up to the popular live action film that made over $1.05 billion at the global box office. The core cast of Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott are also expected to reprise their roles from the original film.

Disney has penned John Gatins and Andrea Berloff to write the script and Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich to produce the next chapter. According to The Hollywood Reporter, over the summer the writers for the film discussed new potential storylines for the sequel. Some of these included possibly taking ideas from “One Thousand and One Nights, the collection of Middle Eastern folk tales that also houses Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and Sinbad the Sailor.”

Although many moviegoers have grumbled at the vast amount of Disney classic live action movies to come out recently, the huge box office returns will continue this trend for the foreseeable future. You can count me in as part of the crowd that would prefer to see some fresh ideas, instead of cash-grab remakes. That being said however, I enjoyed Aladdin more than I had anticipated.

The cast which included some new talented faces, mixed with musical pieces and dance routines that were updated for a new generation was a breathe of fresh air. Many of the live action Disney remakes that have come out as of late have been just that. By the book remakes that are more interested in playing it safe for the fans or the originals, than pushing the envelope and creating something new and exciting.

The idea that the writers may have taken ideas for the sequel from stories such as Sinbad the Sailor, is an exciting proposition. We will have to wait and see how it develops but for now you can watch the original on Disney +.
