Disney’s 2020 Film Release Slate
Walt Disney Studios sent out a press release today with their upcoming slate of films for the remainder of 2020. The list includes some anticipated Marvel films, a few bestselling book adaptations, a remake of a classic musical, and at least one surprising biopic.
There are three February releases on the list, including the thriller Underwater starring Kristen Stewart, the Alps ski trip comedy Downhill featuring the pairing of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell, and an adaptation of Jack London’s classic Yukon Gold Rush adventure novel, The Call of Wild, with a bearded Harrison Ford as wizened adventurer John Thornton and a CGI dog as Buck.
Spring highlights include the live action remake of Disney’s Mulan, The New Mutants, a fresh entry in the X-Men franchise starring Maisie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy, and Marvel’s Black Widow hitting cinemas on May 1. Artemis Fowl, an adaptation of the popular children’s book directed by Kenneth Branagh also comes to theaters in May.
Jungle Cruise, a film inspired by Disney’s theme park ride, promises a fun adventure-filled event for the summer, and fall brings Kenneth Branagh’s return as director and star of a new take on a classic mystery. Reprising his role as Hercule Poirot, Branagh directs a talent-heavy cast, including Gal Gadot, Letitia Wright, and Rose Leslie in an adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic Death on the Nile.
In the key December release spot, Disney brings 20th Century Fox’s reimagining of the Broadway musical West Side Story to theaters on December 18. The adaptation is directed by Steven Spielberg and will be his first project as director since 2018’s Ready Player One. Pulitzer Prize winner Tony Kushner penned the film’s screenplay.
Some film titles are listed without definitive release dates, including The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a biopic drama based on the 2000 documentary of the same name about televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker. Jessica Chastain is set to start in the film’s title role.
