First Trailer Released for Vertigo’s ‘The Kitchen’

The Kitchen
Move over boys – the women run Hell’s Kitchen now in the first trailer for Andrea Berloff’s Vertigo adaptation of The Kitchen.

With today’s glut of comic book movies, it’s perhaps surprising that the last movie based on DC’s popular Vertigo imprint was almost a decade ago, with 2010’s The Losers. Now, New Line Cinema and BRON Creative are set to bring the critically-acclaimed label back to the screen with an adaptation of Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle’s The Kitchen. Written and directed by Andrea Berloff, the Oscar-nominated writer of Straight Outta Compton making her directorial debut, the female led crime drama stars Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish, and Elisabeth Moss as the housewives who take over the family business.

I must admit with McCarthy and Haddish attached, and having not read the source material, my first thoughts were that this might be a comedy, but as you can see from the trailer, nothing could be further from the truth. Based on the trailer, the actresses certainly look to have the range to pull a more serious movie off, so I’m excited to see what they bring to these characters.

In addition to its three leads, the film also stars Domhnall Gleeson, James Badge Dale, Brian d’Arcy James, Margo Martindale, Common, Bill Camp, Jeremy Bobb, E. J. Bonilla, Wayne Duvall, Annabella Sciorra, and Myk Watford.

The Kitchen stars Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Bridesmaids), Tiffany Haddish (Girls Trip), and Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) as three 1978 Hell’s Kitchen housewives whose mobster husbands are sent to prison by the FBI. Left with little but a sharp ax to grind, the ladies take the Irish mafia’s matters into their own hands – proving unexpectedly adept at everything from running the rackets to taking out the competition… Literally.

Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, The Kitchen arrives in theaters August 9th, 2019.
