HBO Removes ‘Game of Thrones’ Coffee Cup Goof

Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones
One of the big talking points after last week’s Game of Thrones was the errant coffee cup that appeared in one shot on a table in front of Daenerys. It almost entirely dominated the post-episode conversation and led people to wonder what HBO would do about it.

Well, it might not surprise anyone to find out that HBO has decided to edit the coffee cup out of the episode entirely, so it will no longer appear on future airings. The cup appears on a table in front of Dany at the 17:40 mark and had been forgotten about before the cast and crew jumped into shooting the next scene. Unfortunately, it was never picked up in editing and post-production and made it through to the final version of the episode.

HBO released a witty statement on Monday acknowledging the error, claiming that ‘The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.’ Some of the fans who noticed felt it was a humorous error and made jokes, while others were undoubtedly disappointed that a jarring error like this could make it through to the final product.

However, as of Tuesday, the coffee cup has disappeared in the streaming version of the episode, titled “The Last of the Starks”, available on HBO Now and HBO Go, as well as other official streaming services. Here’s what the initial shot with the coffee cup looked like:

And here’s what the shot looks like now that it’s been digitally removed from the episode:

Game of Thrones no coffee cup

Hauke Richter, the Art Director on Game of Thrones, pointed out to Variety that the controversy was exaggerated and only really seemed like a big deal because Game of Thrones is usually so careful at picking up on these things. Such production errors often take place on productions both big and small, so it’s quite impressive that it took Game of Thrones 70 episodes before something like this occurred. At least Starbucks got $2.3B of free advertising out of the goof, even though the coffee cup wasn’t actually one of their drinks.

Honestly though, there are far more important things worth talking about from the last episode, so it’s a good thing that the cup has been removed and people will no longer be distracted by something so silly. For more updates on Game of Thrones, stay tuned to Movie News Net.
