‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Ends Phase 3, Not ‘Avengers: Endgame’
Move over, Avengers: Endgame – Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige states that Spider-Man: Far From Home, and not the massive team-up event serving as the thing that the 21 previous films were building up to, is the film that wraps up Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
While Tom Holland’s second solo outing as the webslinger was previously said to be the first film set after the Infinity Saga and the first film of Phase Four, it will instead be the last film of the Infinity Saga and the last Phase Three film. This bit of information came out during the Chinese portion of the press tour for Endgame, where Feige explained that there was a slight change of plan when an interviewer asked him about Far From Home:
“It’s the end of the third phase. You’re the first person I’ve told that to!”
So that must mean that 2020’s Black Widow movie will be the start of Phase Four. Unfortunately, Feige’s answer and the question that preceding it are the only parts of that entire clip that are in English. If you want to brush up on your Chinese linguistics, you can watch the full clip below:
In the grand scheme of things, this probably doesn’t mean a whole lot, other than determining what box set Far From Home will end up in. The decision here is in-line with the decision to move Ant-Man to the end of Phase Two, after Avengers: Age of Ultron, as a sort of denouement to the big event. Now, it looks like the Spider-Man franchise will join the club that the Iron Man and Avengers franchises inhabit, in that both of those franchises have two films released in the same phase (Phase One being home to both Iron Man and Iron Man 2, and Phase Three being home to Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame). From the sound of things, Far From Home will allow audiences to take a breather after the emotional conclusion that Endgame is going to provide, and ease people into a Marvel Cinematic Universe free to go into new directions after the threat of Thanos has subsided.
The official synopsis to Avengers: Endgame is as follows:
The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.
The official synopsis to Spider-Man: Far From Home is as follows:
