A Fourth ‘Thor’ Movie Could Happen With Taika Waititi, Says Tessa Thompson

According to Tessa Thompson, Marvel are thinking about a pitch for a fourth Thor movie, with Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi favored to direct such a project.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Thompson stated that she got word that Marvel may be interested in doing another Thor movie in Phase 4, after glowing reception to Waititi’s Ragnarok:

“I heard that a pitch has happened for [another Thor film]. I don’t know how real that intel is, but I hear that the pitch has happened. I think the idea is Taika [Waititi, who directed Ragnarok] would come back.”

The Son of Odin was originally seen as the weakest link of the Avengers team, but with Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War, reception has completely turned around for the character and he’s seen as just as worthy a character to focus on as Captain America and Iron Man. Avengers: Endgame is the character’s last known appearance, but right now it’s not clear if he lives or dies in the film. A fourth movie in the series would strongly suggest that he sticks around.

Prior to Thanos killing three-quarters of what was left of his people between destroying the Commodore and then snapping half of those that were left out of existence, Thor stated that his goal would be to rebuild Asgard on Earth following its destruction, thinking that Norway (where his father, Odin, died) would be a fitting place to start over. If they take this route, and Norman Osborn is indeed a villain that they’re building towards, then Marvel could plant the seeds for a potential adaptation of Siege, a story arc in which Osborn and the Dark Avengers assault the new Asgard.

It’s also exciting to consider the possibility that established franchises within the Marvel Cinematic Universe could potentially see more than three installments. While there’s not indication that the same people who starred in the first three movies of any given series would be coming back for as much as another trilogy of films, it seems like the door is open for legacy characters to take over the mantle of certain superheroes that will be retiring (at least for now) by the end of Endgame.

Thor Odinson will appear in Avengers: Endgame, which will be released on April 26, 2019. Afterward, it’s unclear whether or not Chris Hemsworth will continue playing the character, as he would have to renegotiate a contract with Marvel. And since the hypothetical Thor 4 is just a pitch right now, there’s no telling if such a movie will be made anytime soon, if ever.
