‘Avengers: Endgame’ Featurette Shows How Heroes React to Loss

Avengers: Endgame
The first official Avengers: Endgame featurette showcases how devastating their loss in Avengers: Infinity War was, with how the characters have changed and how they’ll bounce back from something so horrible to triumph being the central theme of the film.

The cast and crew are emphasizing that a key element of what makes this movie different is that it’s based entirely around what happens after the heroes fail, something that hasn’t been done in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie as of yet. A common theme with the characters is that they are all shaken by what happened and that the experience has hardened them… But being heroes, they’re not going to give up.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also chimes in to note that the devastated audience reactions he heard in response to the tragic ending to Infinity War was a clear sign that he had done his job correctly. It’s hard to imagine that only a decade (and some change) ago, most of these characters were obscure to audiences that had never picked up a comic book; now, they’re superstars that people are emotionally invested in. But even though this is the end of the road for many of these characters, the ones who will carry the setting going forward will still need a guiding hand to ensure that audiences connect with them, alongside all the new characters that will join the setting in the years following Endgame.

You can watch the featurette below:

Aside from a couple of shots of Hawkeye, there’s not really a lot of new footage here. It’s also worth noting that the behind-the-scenes shots of the cast answering questions actually match up with similar featurettes that were filmed to tie in with Infinity War, which raises some interesting questions about where the characters might be at varying points in Endgame.

The film’s official synopsis is as follows:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019.
