‘Avengers: Endgame’ Posters Reveal Snap Survivors and Casualties

Avengers: Endgame
A month out from release, and Avengers: Endgame continues to keep as many secrets as possible. However, a new set of posters has confirmed which characters survived Thanos’s devastating culling of half of all life in the universe, along with those who didn’t – and there are a handful of revelations to be found within them.

Marvel have revealed no less than 32 character posters of the cast. Fittingly, half are living characters (represented by color photos), and the other half are dead (represented by greyscale photos). There are a couple of interesting confirmations here; we already knew a bulk of the survivors and casualties of Infinity War from the get-go, but given that the ending of the movie only focused on the Avengers themselves, the survival or doom of a handful of characters was left unconfirmed. Sure, we knew that Hawkeye, Ant-Man, and Captain Marvel were going to be in the next one due to their absence in that movie, but we didn’t see what happened to other characters who either sat the movie out or weren’t present for the battles in Wakanda or on Titan.

Well, now we’ve got some answers – some of which might relieve fans and some of which will upset them. The posters can be seen below:

So let’s unpack this, starting with the survivors. As expected from the cast list of the latest theatrical poster, the survivors include Pepper Potts, Happy Hogan, Okoye, and Wong. But to the relief of many fans is one notable addition to the list of survivors in the form of Thor: Ragnarok‘s Valkyrie, who was entirely absent from Infinity War. The director’s commentary on that film revealed that she helped many of the surviving Asgardians escape from Thanos and his forces before the opening scene, but there’s no word on whether or not Korg and Miek also survived.

For the list of confirmed dead, there are two characters of note, the first of whom is Loki. Fans speculated that he somehow faked his death with Thanos, but the Mad Titan’s assessment that there would be “No resurrections this time.” proved to be accurate. More surprising is the demise of Shuri; while the teaser trailer for Endgame featured Shuri as someone who had gone missing in action, fans had presumed that she may have just gone missing like Ant-Man (who went missing, but did not die), but this outright confirms that she was dusted.

Fans can probably expect both sets of characters, living and dead, to play important roles in Avengers: Endgame, even when half of them are presumably going to be absent from a good chunk of the film. (Let’s not pretend that they won’t be resurrected.) But this kind of advertising campaign is a smart way to maintain the illusion that they’re gone while also advertising that they will be in the film itself. It’s hard to believe that we’re just a month away from seeing the conclusion of a 22-movie story.

The film’s official synopsis is as follows:

The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, Avengers: Endgame.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26, 2019.
