‘American Gods’ Renewed For Season 3

Ian McShane in American Gods
American Gods has officially been renewed for a third season on Starz, and it will have a new showrunner.

While the show’s renewal is great news for fans of Neil Gaiman’s original novel, news of another change in showrunner might raise some eyebrows. Charles ‘Chic’ Eglee will take over as showrunner and executive producer for season 3, after Jesse Alexander took over during the previous season. Alexander was quickly exiled from the production though, and was asked to stop working on the series, despite never being officially fired. Reports suggest that multiple scripts of his were rejected before he was asked to step away.

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were co-showrunners in the first season, but left the production after clashing with Fremantle (who produce the show) over the show’s budget and creative direction. Fans will hope that Eglee’s writing talents are far superior to his predecessor. His credits include Hemlock GroveThe Walking DeadDexter, and The Shield, and Neil Gaiman himself seems pretty happy he’s on board:

“I’m thrilled American Gods has been renewed for a third season, and even more thrilled that I’m getting to work on it with Chic Eglee. Chic is the best partner-in-crime. We’ve been working for weeks now on the shape of the season and I’m delighted that he gets to carry the American Gods torch on to glory. Thank you to Fremantle, Starz and Amazon for having faith in the series, to Bryan, Michael and Jesse for bringing it this far, to all the cast and crew, and most of all to the viewers. It’s their love of the characters that took us to this point, and will take us on to the next chapter.”

Carmi Zlotnik, Starz’s President for Programming, was very enthusiastic about Eglee and the show’s renewal:

“Audiences continue to worship at the altar of American Gods and we are excited to be able to announce to all the true believers that there is more of this fantastical series to come. With Chic at the helm, the invaluable insight and contributions of Neil Gaiman and the undeniable talent of this dedicated cast and crew, we know that the show will continue to deliver on the vision and promise laid out in the novel.”

American Gods Season 2 is currently airing on Starz and is available on Amazon in other parts of the world.
