Sherlock Holmes 3 Set In Old West San Francisco

Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson
Warner Bros. latest entry in the Sherlock Holmes franchise is about to shake things up by setting the film in San Francisco in the time of the Old West.

It’s been eight years since Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows debuted to limited fanfare, and Warner Bros. has been looking to release the third part of the trilogy ever since. Now that Robert Downey Jr. is done with his Avengers commitments and director Guy Ritchie is nearly done with Bush and Disney’s Aladdin, it looks like the studio will finally have its key players available at the same time to start making the sequel.

Reports state that filming is expected to begin in January 2020, so we won’t see the film until 2021, a full 10 years after the previous installment. That’s asking a lot for audiences to be interested in a sequel to a film that most people weren’t that bothered about when it first came out, especially when the two are a whole decade apart.

The reported change in scenery seems like a smart move, then.  Victorian London is a tried and tested era, especially for a character as storied as Sherlock Holmes (God knows it did nothing for 2018’s Holmes and Watson). Setting the film in San Francisco during the Old West is a good way to take Holmes out of his comfort zone and treat audiences with an exciting new locale for Holmes and Watson to go on new adventures.

We don’t know an awful lot else about the film at the moment, other than Guy Ritchie will return to direct and Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will return to star as Holmes and Watson respectively. Considering the film is roughly two years away from release, that sounds about right.

We’ll likely hear a bit more about the film at the end of the year, once the production gets closer to filming or a synopsis is released. We’ll let you know as soon as you hear more.
