Movies Coming Out This Week: ‘Captain Marvel’

Captain Marvel
It should come as no surprise that only one movie is getting a wide theatrical release this week. Other studios may have wanted to stay clear of this weekend since Marvel’s own Captain Marvel finally hits the big screen! Meanwhile, Netflix will drop a big movie of their own with Triple Frontier, exclusively to streaming.

Captain Marvel

The MCU will finally have its first standalone super-heroine film. Though the comparisons to DC’s Wonder Woman feel inevitable – probably because Wonder Woman is the only other female superhero film with a positive reception – I’m sure the origin story of Carol Danvers will be unique enough to stand on its own. Hopefully Captain Marvel will be successful enough to show Hollywood that female-led superhero movies can work, especially since some of the only other examples include the poorly received Elektra, Catwoman, and Supergirl. We already know that a Black Widow movie is in development, and rumors about a Ms. Marvel project of some kind have also been floating around the internet for a while, so hopefully we’ll get to see more strong female characters leading these blockbuster tent-poles. I might be in the minority here, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a movie about Squirrel Girl.

Captain Marvel is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the duo best known for Mississippi Grind. While I have admittedly never seen their work, I’m sure Marvel trusted them for a reason. Mississippi Grind currently hold a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, and though Captain Marvel is still under an official review embargo, the social media reactions have been quite positive. The tracking numbers for the movie also appear to be strong, with some projections placing the movie at a $140 million opening weekend. So internet trolls be damned! I’m sure Captain Marvel will be a fun time at the theaters.

Of course I can’t forget to mention that some of the excitement behind Captain Marvel must stem from the fact that we are one step closer to Avengers: Endgame. Infinity War’s after credit scene teased the super-heroine to fans, so I’m sure plenty of people want to know how powerful Carol Danvers really is, and if she can go toe-to-toe with Thanos. We’ll finally have our answers this week, then Endgame will follow shortly after next month. And who’s to say that there might not be a preview for Endgame after the credits?

The film stars Brie Larson as the titular heroine, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Jude Law as Yon-Rogg, and Annette Bening as The Supreme Intelligence. Fans will also be treated to seeing several returning characters; Samuel L. Jackson will obviously appear as a de-aged Nick Fury, Clark Gregg returns as Agent Phil Coulson, Djimon Hounsou returns as Korath, and Lee Pace will appear as Ronan the Accuser.

Synopsis:

Set in the 1990s, Carol Danvers becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.

Triple Frontier

Netflix continues to impress me with how good their original films are getting. Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma won several prestigious awards at the Oscars, and Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman is coming out later this year. This week, we’re getting an action oriented movie from J. C. Chandor, the director of a fantastic little film called All Is Lost. So while all of the action looks pretty intense, I’m sure Chandor can deliver on making some interesting character driven moments.

Triple Frontier stars Ben Aflleck in his first movie since announcing to the world that he is no longer Batman. And while I’m sure that idea still makes certain DC fans upset, it’s good to know that Affleck is taking a step in the right direction in order to move on with his career. Affleck is a skilled actor and a talented director; I would get tired too if people only cared about my role as one character. Triple Frontier looks like it’s going to be a fun time, and I can’t wait to see what Affleck brings to the film.

The movie also features a stellar cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal. Though Triple Frontier’s official Netflix release is on March 13, it will be getting a limited theatrical run starting March 6.

Synopsis:

Loyalties are tested when five military veterans reunite to rob a South American drug lord, unleashing a chain of unintended consequences that pushes their skills – and morals – to a breaking point.
