‘Mad Max’ and ‘The Matrix’ May Have a Future at Warner Bros.

Matrix Mad Max
Warner Bros. have more intellectual property at their fingertips than it seems that they know what to do with, but there’s some good news for fans of The Matrix and Mad Max alike, as both of those franchises may yet have futures.

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Warner Bros. Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara states that he’s open to doing a fourth Matrix film and a sequel to Mad Max: Fury Road as part of the company’s continued commitment toward covering all kinds of films on their slate:

“We have incredible franchises on the features side such as The Matrix. We’d love to work with George Miller on furthering the Mad Max franchise.”

We previously shared a rumor about the future of Mad Max at the bottom of an article confirming the demise of Paramount’s World War Z sequel, and it’s good to hear that there is still interest in making one. The big issue, however, is that there’s a big, ugly financial dispute hanging over the franchise that’s been stalling development of either the planned Furiosa spin-off or Mad Max: The Wasteland, a follow-up to Fury Road. But it seems like whatever’s been holding things up might soon be at an end, as a less-expensive sequel to the ever-popular Fury Road could make the franchise a proper must-see event.

Meanwhile, talk of some kind of continuation of the long-dormant Matrix franchise has appeared throughout film news publications for quite some time, but it hasn’t gone anywhere. Last we heard, Michael B. Jordan was apparently the studio’s top pick to star in a new project set in that universe that was developed by Zak Penn (The Avengers, Ready Player One). Rumors pegged it as a prequel to the original film, with Jordan portraying a younger version of Neo’s mentor, Morpheus (portrayed by Lawrence Fishburne in the trilogy of films made by the Wachowski siblings). Should that be successful, more movies in the influential cyberpunk franchise could be developed.

As it stands, no Mad Max or Matrix projects are currently scheduled on the Warner Bros. slate, but we’ll be sure to provide updates if and when they come at Movie News Net.
