How Disney+ Will Shape the Future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Marvel Studios
The upcoming Disney+ streaming service is going to play an instrumental part in the further development of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Kevin Feige. While he won’t get into specifics, he will say that the shows produced for the platform will be more interconnected to the movies than anything that came before.

Talking with Screen Rant while at a press junket for Captain Marvel, Feige explained that there will be real, tangible connections between the films and the Disney+ shows, and that unlike earlier series developed by Marvel Television, the movies will directly reference the events of the shows:

“We were entirely involved. Marvel Studios is producing for Disney Plus. And, without being too specific, we want to do something that’s going to stand right alongside the [Marvel Cinematic Universe] films and will be completely intertwined, and the story and the characters will go back and forth between Disney Plus programming and the films.”

Currently, Feige will talk about only one project in vague terms: Loki, which is believed to be a prequel showing how the Norse God of Michief ended up Forrest Gump-ing his way through the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Feige has chosen not to address projects confirmed to be in-development by various Hollywood trades, such as The Vision and Scarlet Witch and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, much less rumored series like Lady SifWar Machine, and Hawkeye. Or, for that matter, anything regarding a series dedicated to a certain X-Men character that was licensed out to Fox for more than 20 years.

For now, all we can say for sure is that Disney+ will play a big part in the world-building of the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward. And oh, is there so much to build to this gigantic world. The first decade of storytelling has only managed to scratch the surface as virtually every single intellectual property ever written about in a Marvel-published comic is fair game to explore as the setting gets bigger and bigger. We haven’t seen anything yet.

Marvel projects confirmed to be in development for Disney+ include LokiThe Vision and Scarlet Witch, and Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
