‘Captain Marvel’ Ticket Presales Surge After First Screenings

Captain Marvel
Recently, some misinterpreted comments from Captain Marvel star Brie Larson led to keyboard warriors that thrive off of manufactured outrage to declare the movie a flop ahead of its release. They’re about to get a Photon-Blast-shaped egg on their face, because Captain Marvel tickets are being pre-sold at an incredibly fast rate.

Fandango’s managing editor Erik Davis has revealed that, following critical praise for the first screening of Captain Marvel, there’s been an influx of ticket presales taking place. In fact, the movie’s presales are now swelling to a point that it’s outpacing the likes of fellow hits like DeadpoolAquaman, and Wonder Woman, setting the superhero origin up for what should probably be a big opening weekend. Right now, it’s only trailing last year’s mega-hit Black Panther in that regard.

So, to put that into visual representation…

Yeah. If the opening weekends of those other movies are of any indication, then Captain Marvel is in good company here. DeadpoolAquamanWonder Woman, and Black Panther all made over $300M in their runs at the box office, with the latter two exceeding $400M by the time that their runs were finished.

However, I should note that presales don’t necessarily mean everything. Although Aquaman presold more tickets than DeadpoolAquaman opened to $67M+ and Deadpool opened to $132M+. (Aquaman ultimately had the last laugh with a global gross of $1.1B+ and counting compared to Deadpool‘s $783M+, but that’s beside the point.) Some skeptics have also pointed out that Solo outsold Black Panther for a time before ultimately flopping, but they’re misinterpreting this data. The thing was that the ticket presales moved very quickly at first for Solo as the most die-hard of fans secured their seats on opening night, and casual audience interest slowed to a trickle as the movie got closer to release; the same phenomenon ended up happening to Justice League. Conversely, Captain Marvel presales have consistently been doing well and are only continuing to grow, bolstered by positive first responses.

If the Captain Marvel manages to continue its upward rate of securing audience interest in the weeks ahead, then the movie should exceed its official $100M-$120M opening weekend estimate significantly, much like how Black Panther did a little over a year ago. Here’s hoping that the opening weekend estimates only continue to rise from here, and that the weekend ultimately exceeds those expectation. Speaking of stuff that’s rising…

Captain Marvel will be released on March 8, 2019.
