Filming on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Season 7 Has Begun

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s sixth season won’t air until this May, but the seventh season has just started filming. To save money on production costs for the cult favorite Marvel series, ABC greenlit another season shortly after committing to a sixth one at he eleventh hour.

Ming-Na Wen, one of the lead actresses starring in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has confirmed that she has just begun work on the seventh season of the Marvel series via her Instagram:

ABC’s reasoning for greenlighting another season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which has been on the bubble of cancellation since Season 3, boils down to three things. The first factor is that it’s free advertising for Marvel’s movies. The second factor is that the show consistently does well on on-demand, no matter what time slot the show is placed upon; Seasons 4 and 5 were placed at late, unfavorable times of day (with the latter even having the dreaded “Friday Night Death Slot” that usually precedes a cancellation), but people tuning in after the initial broadcast make it worth ABC’s while as long as the producers are able to keep making episodes on a tight budget. The third factor is that, with Season 6 being only 13 episodes (which is significantly fewer than previous seasons), there’s still time in the schedules of the actors to do more, so filming another 13-episode season then and there would save on money and hypothetically give these actors more time to do other work during the off-season.

In any case, the show’s producers don’t expect Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to end with Season 7. With the way that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is headed post-Avengers: Endgame, S.H.I.E.L.D. looks to be very important to the future of the setting, so continuing to show some of the smaller-scale adventures on the small screen is in Marvel’s best interest going forward.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 will air in May 2019. The show has also been renewed for a Season 7, which does not yet have a release window.
